NEW YORK CITY — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is set to endorse Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race, according to a report.

Jefferies will make the endorsement in a statement expected to be released Friday afternoon, according to POLITICO.

The House Minority Leader joins Gov. Kathy Hochul and other New York Democrats who have announced their support for Mamdani.

The new development comes as early voting is set to begin on Saturday across the city.

Jeffries had avoided endorsing Mamdani in the last few weeks when asked by reporters, but two in-person meetings in Brooklyn with the state assemblyman and pressure from other Democrats may have played a role, according to the report.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a key figure in the Democratic Party, has not made an endorsement in the race.
