Henri Hits In Rhode Island, NY Under Tropical Storm Warning

NEW YORK CITY – Henri made landfall in Rhode Island Sunday, missing New York but leaving Long Island and New York City feeling the effects of a tropical storm.

The National Weather Service had expected the storm is to hit near Montauk and Narragansett Bay late morning or early afternoon at hurricane strength. It changed path and weakened to make landfall nearly Westerly, about 25 miles further north, at 12:15 p.m. Its force is expected to drop dramatically as it veers north.

A tropical storm warning and a flood watch remained in effect in NYC with up to six inches of rain predicted.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 45 mph in the city.

Rain partially associated with the approaching storm started to wreak havoc in NYC Saturday night. The much heralded Homecoming Concert that brought thousands to Central Park was halted as lightning and heavy rain approached, with fans evacuated out of the area.

And in parts of Brooklyn, cars were stuck as roads were inundated with water, the New York Post reported. Saturday saw the wettest hour ever recorded in NYC.

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9am and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. Southwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday Night
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9pm and 3am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
