Indoor Pools Can Reopen In NYC On Sept. 30

The city's pools will have a 33 percent capacity limit for their reopening, officials said.

NEW YORK CITY — Swimmers across New York City are bound to be lapping up the latest reopening from coronavirus restrictions.

Indoor pools can reopen starting Sept. 30 at 33 percent capacity, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced.

“Swimming pools are a community anchor, an exercise center, and an oasis in their neighborhoods—both literally and figuratively,” he said in a statement Friday. “New Yorkers have worked hard to fight back COVID-19. As transmission rates remain low, we’re proud to offer more ways to slowly return to business as usual.”

Pools, along with much else in New York City, closed for months amid the coronavirus pandemic. The city gradually reopened, but indoor fitness facilities like gyms, yoga studios and more lagged behind because of concerns with spreading the virus.

Gyms recently received an opening go-ahead, albeit with strict health measures, but indoor fitness studios were left behind.
