- A New York State Supreme Court judge ruled on Friday that the city's vaccine mandate for NYPD officers that are members of the police union is invalid, ordering that all workers who were fired or put on leave be reinstated. New York City is planning to appeal the decision, saying it is, "at odds with every other court decision upholding the mandate as a condition of employment." (NBC New York)
- Average Manhattan rents rose 28 percent in August to $5,246 when compared to the same month last year, a study from Douglas Elliman found. Brooklyn wasn't far behind with a 24 percent increase. The rise is particularly notable in the luxury rental market. (New York City Patch)
- Black, Asian, Latino and female New York City municipal workers earn less on average than their white male counterparts, according to a new study from the City Council. Council members believe that's due to "occupational segregation" by which workers from minority backgrounds "are more likely to hold lower-paying city jobs." (Gothamist)
- Fifty local unions filed a lawsuit in Queens Supreme Court this week against the global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. for its role in fueling the opioid crisis. The firm previously settled for $600 million in 49 states last year. This filing claims that the unions have needed to tap into their pension funds due to the "unreimbursed costs related to the over-prescription of opioids." (THE CITY)
- Recently announced state legislation would require all migrants facing the prospect of deportation in New York the right to an attorney. The bill, to be introduced by State Senator Brad Hoylman and Assembly Member Catalina Cruz, comes as thousands of asylum seekers are arriving in New York City by bus. (AMNY)
