NEW YORK — Smoke in a tunnel roiled Long Island Rail Road commutes in New York City during the Thursday evening rush hour. Trains into Penn Station from the Jamaica, Queens hub were briefly halted because of the "smoke condition" in one of the East River tunnels, the LIRR said.

Service was suspended at about 6:13 p.m. but was restored about eight minutes later, according to the LIRR's Twitter posts.

Commuters can still use their LIRR tickets to get on the 2, 3, 7 or E subway lines, the railroad said. The MTA warned of delays on the Babylon and Port Washington branches after eastbound trains on those lines were canceled because of the smoke problem.
