Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. A new initiative unveiled by Mayor Eric Adams, "Project Pivot," enlists local community groups with protecting students at 138 NYC public schools. The plan comes in response to the public safety concerns of students and parents — one of whom said they now arm their children with pepper spray. (New York City Patch)
  2. The gap between falling wages and a rise in rental prices in New York City is at the highest that it's been since 2008, a new StreetEasy study found. Nearly half of the city's essential workers, for instance, cannot afford 90 percent of the housing stock. (New York City Patch)
  3. A federal judge in Syracuse has ruled against New York's ban on guns in sensitive locations such as Times Square, ruling that it violates the Second Amendment. The change would take effect in three days as of Thursday. (Gothamist)
  4. A commission voted almost unanimously to pass twice-revised City Council redistricting maps on Thursday. The maps include a district combining southern Brooklyn with Staten Island, which drew opposition from one commissioner. The City Council will now decide whether to accept the maps. (Politics NY)
  5. Dispatchers for 911 in New York City are hoping to leave the union, Local 1549 at District Council 37, that currently represents them, in hopes of different options within DC 37. Some workers take issue with their current classification as 'clerical workers,' despite their being designated by Gov. Kathy Hochul as first responders. (THE CITY)
