NEW YORK CITY — A man who wished "Happy New Year" to a group of subway straphangers immediately had anything but, police said.

Four men beat and repeatedly stabbed the well-wisher — a 29-year-old man — in a New Year's Day attack in a Bronx subway station, authorities said.

The attackers and the man crossed paths about 8:45 p.m. on the southbound D platform in the 182nd-183rd Street station, NYPD officials said.

After the man wished "Happy New Year," the four fellow straphangers apparently took offense and began to argue with him, police said.

The argument turned violent, and the men began repeatedly punching the well-wisher, officials said. One attacker flashed a sharp object and stabbed the well-wisher over his body multiple times, police said.

The group then ran off, leaving the bloodied well-wisher on the platform until medics rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.
