Man Who Shoved 91-Year-Old During Failed Robbery Indicted In NYC: DA
Christian Torres, 45, left an elderly man with six broken ribs and a liver hematoma after he shoved him to the ground, prosecutors said.

NEW YORK CITY — A mugger who shoved a 91-year-old man to the ground during a failed Upper East Side robbery has been indicted, prosecutors said.
Christian Torres, 45, faces assault and attempted robbery charges in an indictment unveiled Wednesday — nearly two months after an attack that left an elderly man with six broken ribs and a liver hematoma, authorities said.
"My thoughts are with the victim, who is still suffering from the pain caused by this attack," said Alvin Bragg, district attorney for Manhattan, in a statement.

The failed robbery unfolded Feb. 1 as the 91-year-old man — identified as retired lawyer Hyman Silverglad, a cancer patient with Stage 4 prostate cancer, according to the Daily News — walked home from a fruit stand at Second Avenue and East 86th Street about 10:30 a.m., authorities said.
Torres tried to grab the nonagenarian's wallet as the man neared First Avenue, but failed, prosecutors said. He then shoved the elderly man to the ground and ran off toward Second Avenue, authorities said.

Police arrested Torres, a Ditmas Park resident, nearly two weeks later when transit cops recognized him from a wanted flyer, authorities said.
The elderly man spent a week in Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital and nearly a month afterward in a rehab facility before being released to his home, prosecutors said. He's still in recovery.
