Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Congestion pricing could mean tolls as high as $23 per day for cars entering Manhattan below 61st Street during peak hours, according to an assessment released on Wednesday. The plan is expected to begin in 2023, and there's two virtual public hearings later in August. (New York City Patch)
- Former President Donald Trump invoked the Fifth Amendment to avoid answering questions under oath on Wednesday, amid a probe led by New York Attorney General Letitia James into The Trump Organization. James believes the organization exaggerated the value of its holdings in order to impress lenders or slash tax burdens. (New York City Patch)
- New York City was ordered by a state judge to pay Rikers Island detainees that missed medical appointments, after reports stated that up to 10,000 appointments are missed per month. The payments would be $100 per appointments. (Gothamist)
- Former New York Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin asked that charges against him be dropped in a federal court case. He resigned after being arrested and accused of bribery this spring, for allegedly accepting campaign donations from a Harlem developer in exchange for directing funding to the developer's nonprofit. Benjamin denies there's explicit proof of a “quid-pro-quo.” (New York Post)
- LGBTQ+ members of the NYC Council plan on introducing legislation today aimed at improving the city's response to monkeypox, a virus that has thus far predominantly been detected in men who have sex with men. Their bills would require city agencies to report more detailed data on the outbreak, call on the federal government for more vaccines and prioritize the neighborhoods and communities most at-risk.
