NEW YORK CITY — As more New York City protests are expected on Monday over federal immigration raids, the NYPD and Mayor Eric Adams addressed the recent protests in Los Angeles and said violence of any kind will not be tolerated in the city.

"Keeping the people of our city safe has always been my North Star. That means keeping people safe from violent protests, and it means protecting people who are trying to do the right thing by protesting peacefully for what they believe," Adams said. "But two wrongs do not make a right. I understand that some New Yorkers may be angry, afraid, and ready to express that. New York City will always be a place to peacefully protest, but we will not allow violence and lawlessness."

The joint press briefing came hours after police arrested more than 20 demonstrators during an ICE protest inside Trump Tower, Patch previously reported.

They were calling for the release of inmates from a controversial El Salvador prison, according to a New York Post report.

Protesters were heard chanting, “Bring them back! Bring them home!," according to the report and social media videos.

The mayor added the protests in Los Angeles were "unacceptable and will not be tolerated if attempted in our city."

The comments came a day after tensions continued to escalate in Los Angeles after President Trump deployed the National Guard to quell protests.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the department will protect every person's right to peacefully protest but added that the NYPD does not engage with civil immigration enforcement.

"We will continue to follow the law — but let me crystal clear, we have no tolerance for violence and no tolerance for property damage," she said.

Monday's protests at Trump Tower and Foley Square comes a day after an ICE protest in Lower Manhattan, where dozens of demonstrators were arrested.

A separate protest is supposedly planned to take place outside 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan sometime Monday.

NYPD personnel were seen barricading the surrounding the area and restricting access unless they are law enforcement or given permission, according to social media posts.
