NEW YORK CITY — A meteor passed over New York City skies Tuesday, causing reports of shaking in area homes before disintegrating approximately 30 miles above the city, NASA scientists said.
NASA estimated that a meteor passed near New York City around 11:17 a.m. The meteor passed over the Statue of Liberty before disintegrating 29 miles above midtown Manhattan, NASA said in its "very crude and uncertain" estimation of the object's trajectory.
Several residents on the East Coast reported seeing a fireball between 11:15 and 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and submitted information to the logs of the American Meteor Society. The Perseid meteor shower became visible in this area Sunday and will continue into August.
