Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Migrants and asylum seekers arrived in New York City on Friday, sent in busses from Texas by GOP Governor Greg Abbott. Mayor Eric Adams accused the Governor, who he has been arguing with for several weeks, of using people's lives as 'political pawns.' Adams also called on the federal government to provide the city with resources. (New York City Patch)
- A judge ruled against the City's more than $215 million in budget cuts for the Department of Education, ordering the City Council and Mayor to pass a revised budget, reverting spending levels to what they were last year. City Hall filed a motion to appeal the decision hours later. (City & State)
- A notorious landlord group must pay $2 million for harassing low-income tenants that lived in rent-regulated apartments, according to a settlement announced by Attorney General Letitia James. The money will go towards preserving affordable housing, and a direct payout to wrongfully evicted tenants. (New York City Patch)
- Crime was up by an average of 30 percent last month when compared to July 2021 in almost every category. Overall, there's still been a net 8.7 percent reduction in shootings thus far this year, and shootings are slightly down as well. (AMNY)
- The Queens Borough President issued an advisory decision on Thursday rejecting Innovation QNS, a massive five-block upzoning proposed for Astoria that would build 2,800 new units in the neighborhood–only 700 of which would be affordable. President Donovan Richards cited the need for increased affordability as key to his decision. (New York City Patch)
