Migrant Fatally Stabbed By Fellow Asylum Seeker On Randall's Island

Metal detectors could be added to migrant tent shelters after the slaying of Dafren Canizalez, 24, this weekend, Mayor Eric Adams said.

NEW YORK CITY — An asylum seeker died after a fellow migrant knifed him inside Randall's Island's tent shelter, officials said.

The stabbing Saturday that left Dafren Canizalez, 24, dead likely will lead to increased security, including metal detectors, at migrant shelters, said Mayor Eric Adams.

Cops arrested Moises Coronado, 27, on a murder charge after authorities said he stabbed Canizalez during an argument.

"Essentially, there was an altercation in the chow line in that dining facility there that unfortunately led to one of the guests there being killed with a knife,” said Zach Iscol, the city's emergency management commissioner.

Prosecutors during a Sunday court hearing said that Canizalez, a father of three, got into an argument after Coronado said something to Canizalez's girlfriend, the New York Daily News first reported.

Coronado and at least two others pulled out knives and chased Canizalez after Canizalez punched him in the face, the report states.

Canizalez ended up trapped against a door and fatally stabbed about 7:30 p.m., according to the report and police.

The investigation is ongoing, Iscol said.

Adams said officials had already been discussing installing metal detectors at migrant facilities.

"It's horrific to have someone pursue the American dream to see it turn into a nightmare, to lose your life," he said.
