Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- The federal government is paying the MTA $6 billion, which the agency will use to balance its budget over the next four years. The funding comes as the last payment of a series of pandemic relief spending bills. (New York City Patch)
- Authorities have released the names of the 17 victims of the Bronx fire–including a two-year old child, as well as two five-year-old girls. (New York City Patch)
- New York State began accepting applications for rental aid Wednesday night, but officials expressed concern over offering New Yorkers "false hope," given that the program is most likely lacking in the necessary funding to meet demand. (Spectrum News NY1)
- The number of New Yorkers living in homeless shelters plummeted throughout last year after reaching a pandemic high. While the rates of homeless families fell, the rate of single adults is still on the rise. (The City)
- Mayor Eric Adams's brother had previously been appointed to deputy police commissioner, raising wide-spread allegations of nepotism. After strong push-back Adams gave him a demotion to head of mayoral security. But he's still making over $200,000 per year in the new position. (New York City Patch)
