Nearly 4K Customers Without Power Amid 2nd Day Of NYC Heat Wave: Con Ed

Con Ed has urged residents in the city to avoid using energy-intensive appliances.

NEW YORK CITY — Nearly four thousand New York City residents are without power for a second day in a row amid an ongoing heat wave.

As of 1 p.m., more than 3,960 Con Edison customers have no electricity across the five boroughs, according to its outage map.

Queens currently has the most outages with 2,235, followed by Brooklyn with 999 outages. The Bronx has 666 outages and Staten Island has 67 customers without power. Manhattan is the only borough without any outages.

On Monday, close to 8,000 customers had lost power in Queens, Patch previously reported.

Similarly, in Staten Island, more than 7,000 customers are without power.

Con Ed has urged residents in the city to avoid using energy-intensive appliances like washers, dryers and microwaves. They have asked residents to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning.

The National Weather Service has issued an "Extreme Heat Warning" in New York City from now until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with heat index values of up to 107 degrees during the day expected.

It is important to take precautions during this heat wave, especially for those who are working outside. According to Scientific American, extreme heat is the number one weather-related cause of death in the U.S. It kills more than hurricanes, floods and tornadoes combined most years.
