New York City Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch Monday Evening

Stay inside to beat the heat, but also avoid the late afternoon thunderstorms.

Heat and afternoon thunderstorms are seemingly becoming an everyday occurrence in New York City.

The National Weather Service has again issued a severe thunderstorm watch on Monday for the five boroughs from 12:05 p.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, there's a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon which increases to 60 percent this evening. Some of those storms could be severe.

"The severe thunderstorms expected this evening could also create dangerous travel conditions," New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito said in a statement. "New Yorkers should stay inside during periods of severe weather. If you are outside during a thunderstorm, avoid open areas and try to seek shelter indoors."

And if you're lucky enough to not be stuck at work, be careful on the beaches as well, where there's a high rip current warning until 9 p.m. Monday night.

The afternoon high is predicted to be 92 degrees with a heat index reaching nearly 100 degrees. The weather won't be much better the rest of the week. The high will be 86 on Tuesday and 84 on Wednesday before humidity picks up again for a weekend of temperatures into the 90s. The high on Saturday is 95 degrees.

New York City is also reminding residents that cooling centers have been opened on Monday. To find your nearest cooling center, head to www.nyc.gov/beattheheat.
