Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. A grand jury in New York has voted to indict Donald Trump, making him the first ex-president in United States history to face criminal charges, The New York Times reported. He has been accused of making indirect hush money payments of $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 elections. (New York City Patch)
  2. Social media is to blame for a series of car break-ins and life-threatening stunts, Mayor Eric Adams said on Thursday, following the arrest of five teenagers who were found climbing the Williamsburg Bridge to take pictures from high up. A recent trend on TikTok has also led to the theft of Kia and Hyundai cars. (New York City Patch)
  3. New York State's budget will be late, missing its April 1 deadline, Gov. Kathy Hochul has confirmed. Negotiations between leaders of the State Senate, Assembly and the governor are ongoing, with disagreements on Hochul's plan to building hundreds of thousands of new housing units, and changes to bail reform laws. (Gothamist)
  4. Landlords with rent-stabilized apartments are asking the state's rent guidelines board to approve a large rent increase this year, by as much as in the double-digits, following the release of a report showing a higher percentage of buildings are in financial distress than in previous years. (THE CITY)
  5. It's time to take out the trash — but not too early. New city rules in effect as of today require New Yorkers to put their trash on the streets starting at 8 p.m. at the earliest — later than the previous 4 p.m. and no later than midnight. (New York City Patch)
