Only three states have a steeper effective tax rate than New York, a new WalletHub study shows.

NEW YORK — New Yorkers who haven't done their taxes yet should brace themselves. New York taxes the typical American household at a steeper rate than all but three states in the nation, a new WalletHub study shows.

The Empire State has an effective state and local tax rate of 13.74 percent, giving the median U.S. household an annual bill of $7,978, the personal finance website found. The median household in New York would have to pay an even bigger sum of $10,074, according to the study.

WalletHub ranked the tax rates for the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on their income taxes, sales and excise taxes, vehicle property taxes and real-estate taxes.

The only states with higher effective tax rates than New York are Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Illinois, which takes a cut of nearly 15 percent, according to the study. But the Empire State is actually the highest-taxed when the local cost of living is factored in, WalletHub found.

New York's effective income and real-estate tax rates are the seventh- and ninth-highest in the nation, respectively, the study shows. The former would cost the median U.S. household more than $1,900, while the latter would give that same household a bill of $3,246, according to WalletHub.
