(Patch Media)

Good morning, New York City! From the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe V. Wade to the repeal of a key New York State gun law, there's been a lot of news to process recently. In response, thousands of New Yorkers took to the streets this weekend–both to protest for abortion rights, and in celebration of LGBTQ+ pride.

The weekend also saw a 67-year-old woman be fatally struck by a driver on the run from the police, and major changes to trains and busses alike.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. Governor Kathy Hochul will convene the State Legislature in Albany for a special session to pass new gun safety legislation, following the Supreme Court's ruling Thursday striking down New York's concealed carry gun law. Hochul and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand both praised a bipartisan gun safety law signed by President Biden on Saturday. (New York City Patch)
  2. The MTA announced its redesign of The Bronx's bus routes, adding two new lines and making significant changes to all 46 existing ones. Among the most controversial changes is the elimination of 375 bus stops in the borough — or 18% of the entire network — in an effort to speed up the city's notoriously sluggish service. The city plans to overhaul all five borough's bus networks. (amNY)
  3. Changes are also coming for 900,000 weekday subway riders. The MTA is planning to speed up train times by between five and ten minutes on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 lines, in the first major schedule change since 2018. The A, D, N, Q, R and W lines on the other hand will be running a few minutes slower. (New York Daily News)
  4. Thousands of New Yorkers marched in the streets on Friday and Saturday in protest over the Supreme Court's shocking ruling that overturned Roe V. Wade, effectively banning abortion in dozens of states across the country. Nearly two dozen people were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing traffic on Friday night. (NBC New York)
  5. A car strike on Saturday evening in Bed-Stuy left a 67-year-old woman dead and her eight-year-old grandson critically injured. They, along with three other victims, were hit by a driver who was fleeing from the police, who had noticed two people smoking marijuana in their car. At a press conference, Mayor Adams put the blame for the incident on the state's bail reform laws. (Gothamist)
