NYC Baby Beaten By Mom's Boyfriend Has Died, Case Deemed A Homicide

NEW YORK CITY — A baby girl who was found in critical condition after being beaten by her mother's boyfriend last month has died, police announced on Monday.

Officers found 1-year-old, Imani Mitchell, inside an apartment at 664 Union Ave. in the Bronx on Aug. 28, police said. Mitchell had struck multiple times in the side of her head.

After the incident, Jerome Thomas, 19, was taken into custody and charged with assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The 1-year-old girl was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator due to a hemorrhage on the right side of her head, according to a PIX11 News report.

Mitchell also underwent surgery to remove a piece of her skull to relieve swelling, but her condition worsened, and she was later pronounced dead.

Thomas remains in police custody, and his next court date is scheduled for Sept. 12.
