Happy Friday! New York City's full chokehold ban is back, we may have been over-counted in the 2020 census, and the City Council takes steps to address fire safety. The final iteration of Congressional and State Senate redistricting maps will also be released sometime today, and the MTA wants you to win prizes for transiting around while eating locally.

  1. New York City's chokehold ban is back in place, after being unsuccessfully challenged in court by the police officer's union, which argued it infringed on their ability to perform their job. The "diaphragm law," which was signed by former Mayor De Blasio after the murder of George Floyd, made it a misdemeanor for cops to restrict an individual's ability to breathe. (New York City Patch)
  2. New York may have been overcounted in the 2020 Census, a recently conducted survey determined. The state has actually been experiencing a slowing population growth rate for over a generation. Either way, we're losing one Congressional seat because other states are growing faster. (Spectrum News NY1)
  3. The City Council passed a series of bills on Thursday, meant to address the conditions that led to the tragic Bronx fire in January which took 17 lives. The bills include required fire safety and increased regulations on both space heaters and self-closing doors. (Politics NY)
  4. New York City and state lawmakers are rallying in support of the state's 'clean slate' bill, which would automatically seal the records of all New Yorkers "three years from sentencing misdemeanors and seven years for felonies." The legislation is meant to address racial disparities in the criminal justice system. (amNY)
  5. Saturday would have been the 50th birthday of the late Brooklyn rapper Biggie Smalls, born Christopher Wallace, who was killed in a still-unsolved murder at only 24-years-old. The Empire State Building will host a photo exhibit in his honor, and the MTA is releasing 50,000 limited edition Biggie MetroCards. (New York City Patch)

  • "Oh God, A Show About Abortion," off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre is showing through June 4. The show's timing and the recent Supreme Court leak were a coincidence, we are told. (Time Out NY)

  • All eyes are on New York's "special master," Jonathan Cervas today. He's set to announce the final version of the state's redistricting maps. One issue of concern: the Upper West and East Sides of Manhattan are merged into a single district. As one commenter complained, "While both the East Side and the West Side support synagogues and Jewish schools of national stature, East Side Jews can be clearly differentiated from West Side Jews." (New York City Patch)
