🌱NYC Could Face 'Unprecedented' Hurricane Season + Adult Survivor Law

NYC Daily: The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New York City.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, New York City. The nation is reeling from a mass-shooting in Texas yesterday that took the lives of at least 18 people–almost all children. While it may be hundreds of miles away, New York has seen quite a number of shootings recently. "A passenger on the Q train. Families shopping in Buffalo. School children in Texas. This is fueled by America's toxic gun culture." Mayor Adams wrote on Twitter.

In the news today, NYC is expected to face a high number of hurricanes this season, public school families and teachers are missing information, and an adult sexual survivor bill is now law.

Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. New York City could face an "unprecedented" amount of hurricanes starting next month through the fall, forecasters announced on Tuesday. They predict between 14 to 21 named storms, of which 10 could be hurricanes. Last year saw the third most active hurricane season on record on the East Coast, with 2020 seeing the first. (New York City Patch)
  2. A new lawsuit alleges that one of New York City's biggest real estate brokers, Corcoran, discriminated against low-income residents. Allegedly, housing voucher recipients have been refused apartments, after being told they were required to make an annual income up to 40 times the monthly rent. (Patch)
  3. Survivors of sexual abuse will now be able to sue their culprits decades later. That's what's now legal under the Adult Survivor Act, which was signed into law in Albany Tuesday. The law complements the Child Victims Act of 2019. (New York Post)
  4. New York State will conduct a complete top to bottom report on its handling of COVID-19, Governor Kathy Hochul announced. It will include "the good, the bad, the ugly." Among topics the report might cover are nursing home deaths and remote learning. (Gothamist)
  5. Public school families and teachers are "fuming" at a lack of information shared with them. The Department of Education has yet to release next years school calendar (most years it is released in March or April). Also schools don't have their budgets and high school admissions decisions have not been released. (THE CITY)
