Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. The New York City Council unanimously passed a non-binding resolution on Tuesday to 'refund' the Department of Education, which is facing steep budget cuts just one day before the start of classes today. Council Members have so far not negotiated an agreement with the mayor’sl office to restore funding. (New York City Patch)
  2. Governor Kathy Hochul indicated that New York may soon be lifting its (often unenforced) public transit mask mandate, stating at a press conference that an announcement will be made soon. (AMNY)
  3. Financial experts are concerned about NYC's fiscal outlook in future years, forecasting billions of dollars in budget gaps once federal relief money runs out. The situation is worse now than it was even two months ago, according to an advisory panel, due in part to inflation. Despite the city being in good fiscal shape this year with a $101 billion budget, programs like 3K or newly-expanded housing vouchers lack a sustainable funding stream. (THE CITY)
  4. A developer seeking to build a 17-story apartment building in East Harlem and an auto shop owner in an adjacent lot are accusing each other of harassment and illegal work. The developer, who previously purchased other buildings on the block, claims the owner of Prestige Auto Repair is stopping workers from building a fence on his property, while the owner has accused him of attempting to displace his business. (New York City Patch)
  5. Sorry kids! Snow days are now officially a thing of the past in NYC's public schools. Instead of taking the day off to go sledding and make snow angels, students will now switch to online learning in the case of inclement weather, Schools Chancellor David C. Banks announced. (AMNY)
