Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. COVID-19 cases appear like they might finally be on the decline in New York City after rising over the past several months. Throughout May the positivity and hospitalization rates had either stayed stable or declined. The city is still in the "high risk" category and indoor masking is still recommended. (New York City Patch)
  2. A victim of the mass shooting on a Sunset Park, Brooklyn subway in April is suing a gun manufacturer, alleging it bears responsibility for her injuries. Ilene Steur, 49, is seeking $75,000 in damages from the manufacturer Glock, arguing that it "created a public nuisance that endangered public health and safety." (Gothamist)
  3. Mayor Eric Adams wants to turn NYC into a city of "Yes," by saying yes to new development in the city's collective backyard. Among his key housing proposals: make it easier to convert offices into residential buildings, do away with development parking requirements and update city zoning. (New York City Patch)
  4. Six people were hurt in a fire in Brownsville on Wednesday in a three-story apartment complex. (New York City Patch) Overall, Wednesday was a pretty fiery day across the city. Another blaze broke out in a residential building in Inwood, a mattress caught on fire on the Upper West Side (without injuries) and on Tuesday afternoon two cars "burst into flames" in Kew Gardens.
  5. The New York State Cannabis Control Board approved on Wednesday a series of new marketing and packaging regulations for marijuana products. TV ads are allowed, but they can't target minors and packaging must make clear that it's only intended for those 21 and over. Producers also cannot attribute any health benefits to cannabis. Crime Corner:

  • A pair of masked robbers were caught on a security camera pepper spraying a person in a Greenwich Village deli. They were also seen on May 16 in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. (New York City Patch)
  • A woman on a subway in Brooklyn shouted anti-Asian insults at a 65-year-old man, before biting him, ultimately sending him to the hospital. (New York City Patch)
  • The man who was randomly shot on the Q train two weeks ago was remembered by his family at a ceremony in Park Slope. (New York City Patch)

And now for a little bit of politics:

  • New York 1 will be hosting the first Democratic primary governor debate tonight at 7 p.m. (NY1)
  • There are many races to follow across the city right now, what with new State Senate and Congressional district lines just being released. One of the most closely-watched races is unfolding in the newly-drawn Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn 10th Congressional District - both Lower East Side Councilwoman Carlina Rivera and former Trump impeachment lawyer Daniel Goldman announced their bids Wednesday. (THE CITY)
  • Meanwhile, on the Upper East Side the race is on to fill an open Assembly seat after incumbent Dan Quart announced he would not be seeking re-election. Four Democrats are vying to take his place, while accusing each other of not living in the district. And a fifth (former) candidate just accepted a position in the Biden administration. From my notebook:

  • When Starling Marte hit a home run at a Mets home game earlier this week Alan Alcantara caught the ball - with his one-year-old in hand. (Associated Press)
  • Two more likely cases of monkey pox have been detected in New York City. (New York City Patch)
  • In a last-ditch effort, the NYPD detective's union is suing to prevent unvaccinated officers from being fired on Friday. (New York City Patch)
  • LaGuardia Airport's latest terminal just finished getting a glossy makeover. It was only eight years ago when then-Vice President Joe Biden called the airport a "third world country." (New York City Patch)
  • A video posted to the Instagram account WhatIsNewYork shows what appear to be dolphins swimming close to the shore at a city beach. "Literally every week for years I see dolphins at Rockaway and literally every week I am squealing “DOLPHINS!” in pure delight. 🤩🤩" one commenter said. (Instagram)
