Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Early voting starts today in New York City ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections, with polling locations open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registered New Yorkers will vote for governor, lieutenant governor, state comptroller, attorney general, U.S. senator, as well as local races. (New York City Patch)

- Mayor Eric Adams committed to transitioning 100 public schools in neighborhoods with high asthma rates to electrical heating by 2030, also stating that all new schools will be electric. The new “Leading the Charge” initiative comes with a $4 billion investment. (New York City Patch)
- Workers at a Trader Joe's in Williamsburg voted against unionizing. It would have been the first unionized store out of the company's 14 New York City locations. Union organizers were advocating for higher pay and more sick leave. (Gothamist)
- Migrants seeking information have been told to wait multiple months to receive appointments at New York City's Asylum Seeker Resource Center in Hell's Kitchen. Catholic Charities was awarded $4.5 million to operate the center. Over 21,000 asylum seekers have arrived in NYC since the spring. (Gothamist)
- After Superstorm Sandy struck New York City 10 years ago, a network of thousands of volunteers, calling itself Occupy Sandy because of the organizer's roots in the Occupy Wall Street movement, mobilized across the five boroughs to provide food, clothes and essential supplies to New Yorkers in need. The storm caused an estimated $19 billion in damage and took at least 43 lives. (THE CITY)
