Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- The Department of Education has been on a school superintendent "hiring blitz" since the year started, requiring all current superintendents to reapply for their positions. It announced Thursday a series of new hires across the city. Here's what that means for families on the Upper West Side, Washington Heights, Astoria, Bed-Stuy, and Crown Heights. (New York City Patch)
- New York lawmakers have agreed on legislation to counteract a Supreme Court ruling last week that dismantled the state's concealed weapons law. The new bill, which will be voted on Thursday, would ban guns from hospitals, schools and other sensitive locations, as well as creating a uniform permitting process. (Spectrum News NY1)
- The City Council held a hearing on the conditions at Rikers Island on Tuesday, in which politicians questioned the ability of a newly-formed task-force to improve the safety and mental and physical wellbeing of inmates and correctional officers alike. (amNY)
- Swimming lovers rejoice! New York City opened its outdoor public pools on Tuesday, with daily hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The pools opened despite a national lifeguard shortage, which recently prompted a raise for workers from $18.15 to $22 per hour. (New York City Patch)
- Mayor Eric Adams said that Rudy Giuliani should be investigated for allegedly making false claims about being slapped on the back. Giuliani had claimed the slap could have 'killed' him, which Adams disputes, adding "to falsely report a crime is a crime." (New York City Patch)
