Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- The MTA is amping up its efforts to deter fare evasion on the subway, handing out a total of more than 1,500 summonses to straphangers that jumped the turnstile last week. That's 81 percent more than the same time last year, according to the transit agency. The advocacy group Transit Alliance is concerned, however, that cracking down on fare evasion won't necessarily make the subways. (New York City Patch)
- The owner of a Prospect Heights McDonald's is set to pay $1 million in a settlement with the city's Consumer and Worker Protection department after multiple workplace violations were found in seven fast food joints across the borough, city officials announced Monday. The violations include failing to pay premiums when changing work schedules, failing to obtain employee consent to work extra hours and more. (New York City Patch)
- New York City is allocating $12 million in additional funding to public schools that have seen higher enrollment due to recently arrived asylum seekers. The funding will go towards hiring Spanish-speaking staff, although advocates and the city's comptroller say it's not enough. (Gothamist)
- The Manhattan judge who sentenced Harvey Weinstein to 23 years in prison won't be reappointed to the bench, after not being recommended by Mayor Eric Adams' Mayoral Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. During the trial, Weinstein was represented by, among others, a lawyer who is close friends with Adams' Chief-of-Staff, according to THE CITY. Weinstein's case is currently pending in the states' Court of Appeals. (THE CITY)
- Over the weekend, community leaders and activists gathered in Far Rockaway to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, calling on New York State to make greater public investments to prevent future climate disasters. (New York City Patch)
