Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- Gas prices in the NYC area dipped 10 percent in August, recently released data shows – but they were still more than 30 percent higher than the same time one year ago. Overall prices increased just 0.2 percent in the region, but were still more than 6 percent higher than last year. (New York City Patch)
- In an initial ruling the US Supreme Court found that Yeshiva University in Washington Heights had the authority to block an LGBTQ club from forming on its campus due to religious beliefs. School administrators had reportedly argued that the club's founding would be an infringement on the institution's First Amendment rights. (New York City Patch)
- At least sixty men were not provided beds at a New York City homeless shelter on Monday night – potentially in violation of the city's "Right to Shelter" law – the Legal Aid Society said. This comes at the same time as thousands of migrants are arriving in the city. The city also failed to shelter individuals on two separate nights in July. (NBC New York)
- Education policymakers voted unanimously on Tuesday to adopt new rules which would require greater regulations at close two thousand New York private schools. The vote comes following a New York Times investigation which questioned whether Jewish yeshiva schools provide basic education, such as math, English and history, to their students. (Gothamist)
- New Yorkers whose homes were damaged last year during Hurricane Ida woke up to flooding on Tuesday morning after heavy overnight rain. The city's Department of Environmental Protection says it's identified 18,000 homes at-risk for flooding, but it's unclear how many of them have received protections in the past year. (Gothamist)
