Here are the top five stories in New York City today:

  1. After a fatal crash in Bed-Stuy left one person dead and four more injured, Mayor Eric Adams said he's cracking down on "ghost cars" with fake paper license plates. The NYPD seized over 3,000 unidentified vehicles last year – representing an exponential increase from the past. "If we don't get them off the streets they become a weapon of death for our innocent New Yorkers," the mayor expressed. (New York City Patch)
  2. The New York Hotel and Gaming Trades Council is taking a firm stance against guns, whether they be concealed or not, at NYC's hotels, by banning them completely. That means three out of four hotel rooms city-wide will soon be gun-free. (New York Post)
  3. Six men who were detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after 9/11 received a $98,000 settlement from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The men, who allege they were abused while in custody, represent one of several legal actions that were brought against the government by Muslim, Arab and Hindu plaintiffs. (Gothamist)
  4. The office of an important city agency tasked with providing hundreds of affordable housing units through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program has just one remaining staffer. The staffing shortage is due in part to a pandemic-related hiring freeze, and comes at the same time Mayor Adams is attempting to launch a sweeping housing plan. (The City)
  5. Governor Kathy Hochul signed two laws aimed at reducing carbon emissions — one which imposes regulations on any modifications to building codes. The laws come on the heels of the Supreme Court's ruling last week limiting the ability of the E.P.A. to regulate greenhouse gass emissions. (Brooklyn Paper)
