🌱 NYC Heat Wave Continues + NY Sees First US Polio Case In A Decade

Good morning New York City! Yes, we're still in a heat wave. Here's where you can cool down away from home in the city. Democratic Party leaders are considering NYC for the 2024 national convention, New York just recorded the first US polio case since 2013, and thousands in the region lost power for several hours yesterday.

- Democratic Party leaders are in New York City this week to determine whether it's the right "fit" for the 2024 national convention. They're being guided across the Big Apple by Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul. They say they're looking for city that represents the party's values. (New York City Patch)
- Just to the north of the city, Rockland County recorded the first U.S. case of polio in nearly a decade. The patient was an unvaccinated individual. Polio vaccines are readily available and are typically recommended for infants starting at just two months old. (AMNY)
- Over four thousand homes in the greater New York City area lost power on Thursday amid one of the worst heatwaves in a decade. That includes hundreds in Astoria and in Bayside, Queens. (Spectrum NY 1)
- Two new state bills signed into law aim at improving transparency in NYCHA, the city's large public housing agency, by requiring the creation of a public database where repairs would be tracked and managed. Oftentimes residents are forced to wait in silence for months, if not years, for repairs. (City Limits)
- New York City's job growth in June was only slightly better than in previous months, while the city's unemployment rate – 6.2 percent – remains nearly twice the national average. Some experts believe that a recession might be "around the corner." (THE CITY)

- A group of five lawyers claims they were illegally detained for two hours at the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. (New York Post)
- An investigation by the Queens District Attorney, called "Operation Hotcake," uncovered a five-person gun smuggling ring stretching between Brooklyn, Queens and Tennessee. (New York City Patch)
- A school bus on Hutchinson River Parkway in The Bronx flipped over Thursday, injuring 36 adults who were riding inside. No students were present. (New York City Patch)

- Thousands of monkeypox vaccines will be available again for anyone eligible this evening, at sites in Brooklyn, Queens and The Bronx. The city's official count is now up to 778 positive cases. (Gothamist)
- In possibly the most epic New York City match up of all time, a viral video shows a pigeon and rat sparing with each other on a sidewalk. (Instagram)
- Twenty million oysters, inside of "reef balls," were placed in Hudson River Park on Thursday. (New York City Patch)
- At the last minute, a historic mansion in Bed-Stuy was hit by the recking ball. The building, which was almost granted landmark status, has for decades served as a beloved community gathering space. (New York City Patch)
