Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Leaders from across the globe will travel to New York City this week for the 77th United Nations General Assembly, which runs through September 26. For the first time in two years all world leaders wishing to speak will need to travel to the city in-person – except for Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. (NBC New York) The Assembly will also mean a "nightmare for drivers" due to street closures and traffic being rerouted in and around East Midtown. (New York Post)
  2. The MTA is planning to roll out a pilot program that will create space on city buses for strollers–without taking away from space already designated for people with disabilities. The plan will be tested out on seven routes across the five boroughs. (THE CITY)
  3. The office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott is refusing to coordinate with New York City, Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday during multiple TV appearances. Texas's government has been sending busloads of migrants to NYC, six more of which arrived on Sunday. Adams said his administration is considering housing migrants on cruise ships and considering what legal action they can take against Texas. (Gothamist)
  4. The NYC Department of Education let go of 850 teachers and other staff members on September 5 who hadn't complied with the city's vaccine mandate. In total The New York Post estimates that 1,950 have been terminated since the mandate went into effect last October. (New York Post)
  5. Often referred to as 'The City That Never Sleeps,' the Big Apple has been getting a little more drowsy lately. As The New York Times reports, since COVID (and in some cases before) many 24-hour establishments have scaled back their hours of operations, due to safety concerns, unruly customers or a lack of staff. There's still plenty of 24-hour diners and 99 cents pizza joints. (Subscription: The New York Times)
