Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- The queen is back! Miki Sudo, 36, won Nathan's world-famous July 4th hot dog eating contest Monday, gulping down a total of 40 dogs and buns. She's won every year since she began in 2014–except last year when she was pregnant with her now one-year-old son. (New York Post)
- JFK airport's Terminal 4 was briefly evacuated on Sunday morning, while authorities investigated an unattended bag. The incident was cleared an hour later. (New York City Patch)
- Alternate side parking is back in full force for the first time in two years today, meaning NYC car owners in residential neighborhoods will need to move their vehicles more often. The move comes as the city seeks to address increased complaints of dirty sidewalks and to collect revenue from parking fines. (Gothamist)
- The hundreds of public school teachers that were recently let go from their current positions due to education budget cuts are scrambling to find positions at other locations or teaching different subjects from their training. The city says there's enough space for all of them to remain employed, but some teachers aren't so sure. (New York Post)
- The Department of Corrections is delaying its plans to end solitary confinement practices on Rikers Island, days before the new policy, which would have insured that detainees get a minimum of 10 hours out of their cell per day, was expected to go in place. A federal monitor cited safety concerns as the reason. (THE CITY)
