NYC Malls Can Reopen Sept. 9, Cuomo Says
Indoor malls must have 50 percent capacity and require coronavirus safety measures, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.

NEW YORK CITY — Another piece of pre-coronavirus life — and shopping — will return to New York City.
The city’s malls can reopen at half capacity on Sept. 9, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced.
"Thanks to the hard work of New Yorkers, we are at a point in our fight against this virus where we can safely reopen malls in New York City as long as they adhere to strict health and safety protocols,” Cuomo said Thursday. “Masks, enhanced air ventilation systems, and social distancing will be mandatory.”

Cuomo’s announcement turned into a discussion about indoor dining in New York City — the only part of the state where eateries can’t seat customers indoors.
Mall food courts and other eateries will remain closed as well in the city so long as complying with coronavirus safety measures remains an issue, Cuomo said.

Other rules malls that reopen must follow include strict enforcement of face coverings and social distancing, officials said. They must also have additional staff to control occupancy, traffic flow and seating to avoid crowding, as well as put in place enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols.
The buildings must also have enhanced air filtration, ventilation and purification standards, officials said.
