Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. Third through 8th grade math scores on New York State exams dropped 7.6 percentage points in 2022, newly released data shows, demonstrating the effects of pandemic-related interruptions to education. At the same time, English Language Arts did slightly better. (New York City Patch)
  2. The remnants of Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Florida on Wednesday with close to category 5 strength, could reach New York City by Monday next week, forecasters say. The path of the storm, which could bring heavy rain to the area, is hard to predict right now. (New York City Patch)
  3. New York lawmakers are proposing a bill that would slap a $50 fee on drivers from New Jersey entering the state. That's in response to a bill being considered in New Jersey that would undermine congestion pricing by declining to share driver's information with other states like New York. (Gothamist)
  4. Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is reentering political life with a new Political Action Committee (PAC) aimed at getting "the right people" elected to public office, he announced in an 8-minute video. He's also starting a podcast and a gun safety initiative. (Politics NY)
  5. New York high schools could be required to offer personal financial literacy courses if a state bill passes. The proposal, which has been around in the state since 2009, has a higher chance of passing next year, according to its sponsor State Sen. Leroy Comrie. Stuyvestant High School students have been campaigning hard for it. (City Limits)

Correction: Yesterday's newsletter misstated the number of recent deaths on Rikers Island. There have been 16 deaths so far this year, not in the past week.
