Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- New York Attorney General Letitia James is appealing a federal judge's decision to reserve the state's ban on guns in sensitive spaces such as Times Square. Her appeal could put the law back in place while the case is still pending. Mayor Eric Adams is also in support of the appeal. (New York City Patch)
- Mayor Adams declared a State of Emergency over the massive influx of asylum seekers entering New York City over the past several months — now putting the total number at 17,000. The city is on track to spend $1 billion on the crisis this fiscal year, he added. (New York City Patch)
- The New York Civil Liberties Union is alleging in court that the state's Republican and Conservative Parties' recent challenges to absentee ballot reforms is an attempt to 'wreak havoc' ahead of the Nov. 8 general elections. Their suit concluded that the challenge to New York's law allowing for mail-in ballots to be canvassed as they are turned in, is without merit. (Gothamist)
- The number of citywide shootings in September decreased more than 13 percent compared to last year, while the murder rate decreased 23.5 percent — although the city's overall crime index saw an increase. The NYPD has confiscated over 5,600 firearms year-to-date in 2022. (NBC New York)
- Columbia University will pay a $165 million settlement to 147 women who were the victims of former gynecologist Robert Hadden, who committed sexual abuse while he was their doctor. The victims include Evelyn Yang, the wife of former presidential and NYC mayoral candidate Andrew Yang. Hadden pleaded guilty to two state charges of a "criminal sex act in the third degree" and forcible touching in 2016. (CBS News)
