Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- New York City saw an overall significant reduction in murders (down 38%) and shootings (down 29.1%) in April as compared to last year. Crime overall is still on the rise however, with more burglaries and robberies reported. (New York City Patch)
- It's not just rising cases. More than 2,000 New Yorkers were hospitalized for COVID-19 across the state as of Wednesday, representing an over 150% increase from the beginning of April. While the highest case counts are still reported north of the city, NYC's metrics are trending upwards as well. No new mitigation measures are going into effect as of now. (NBC New York)
- 175 thousand New Yorkers are set to be reimbersed through a settlement with the online tax filing company TurboTax, which allegedly misled low-income users in the past for paying for services that were advertised as "free, free, free." (New York City Patch)
- New York State is banning colleges and universities from withholding the transcripts of students in debt. So-called "transcript-ransoming" has affected upwards of 6.6 million students nationwide. (New York Post )
- A judge on Wednesday described a lawsuit by lawyers representing New York State attempting to reinstate the Congressional and State Senate district lines and move the primary back to its original June 28 date a 'Hail Mary,' denying a temporary restraining order (New York Daily News)
