NYC Pizza Isn't Only Great American Pizza Style, WaPo Ranking Claims

NEW YORK CITY — New York City unsurprisingly has some of America's best pizza, a new Washington Post ranking found.

But, perhaps surprisingly to many New Yorkers, the city's pizza exists alongside equally great regional styles of pizza such as Chicago, Detroit and New Haven.

This pizza blasphemy against New York style pies is the crux of "The Best Pizza in America: Region By Region" by the Post.

The ranking uses Yelp data to choose which regional-style restaurants attract the most and highest rankings.

"But who has the best?" it states. "Well, that’s for you to argue."

The newspaper only considered pizzerias that had at least 100 Yelp reviews and where a substantial share mentioned the pizza style in question — Chicago, New York, Detroit, Neapolitan and Sicilian.

The Post's pizza processors then ranked the reviews with a simple formula that accounted for rating (most important), number of reviews (important) and how often reviews mentioned that particular pizza style (less important). They limited their search for the metro area of the pizza’s birth.

New York provided some difficulties because, in Patch's words, it almost has too much of a good thing.

"Ask a handful of pizza connoisseurs where you should go, and you’ll get several handfuls of answers; New York’s only downside is there are too many great pies to try in a single visit," the Post's ranking states.
