Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- A Staten Island judge struck down New York City's recently passed non-citizen voting law, which would have allowed roughly 800,000 city residents with green cards the right to cast a ballot in city elections and ballot measures. The law was opposed by Republican lawmakers, as well as former Mayor Bill De Blasio. In a statement, the New York Immigration Coalition vowed to support an appeal. (New York City Patch)
- New Yorkers have one more reason to drive slowly in NYC, after the governor signed a law requiring speed cameras near schools to remain on 24/7. Previously they had been turned off between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and on weekends. (New York City Patch)
- Hundreds of essential workers on Broadway — among them custodians, elevator operators and restroom attendants — reached a new union contract agreement on Monday, for the first time since 2016. The new contract includes a pay raise and increased health benefits.(Gothamist)
- Ride the waves, just not on top of the subway! MTA and NYPD officials report a 'dangerous' 560% increase in 'subway surfing'–when a person rides on the outside of a train car–between January and May of this year when compared to 2021. That's 449 surfing incidents in total. They suspect that social media is playing a role in the practice's growing popularity. (New York Post)
- Speaking of the subway, Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill on Monday that would extend legal protections against assault to over 11,000 previously excluded workers, among them maintenance and repair workers. (amNY)
