Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. New York City's elite public middle and high schools will once again be allowed to screen applicants based on their academic records, education Chancellor David Banks announced, reversing a policy put in place by former Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration. Critics of the move are concerned that screening could contribute to segregation in the school system. (New York City Patch)
  2. Street vendors gathered outside of City Hall yesterday to protest what they describe as unfair rules and outdated regulations for their industry and increased enforcement of them by the NYPD. One of the rules is a cap on the number of vendor licenses, which was supposed to be increased by 400 this year. (New York City Patch)
  3. New York City experienced one of its hottest summers in recent years this past season, including the first week-long heat wave since 2013. This summer also saw over 700 heat-related ER visits, which is the most since 2018. (THE CITY)
  4. The New York City Council is considering implementing a syringe buyback program in an effort to clean the city's streets of used needles. It would work similar to returning bottles to a grocery store, with an incentive of 20 cents per needle capped at $10 per day. There's been a steady increase in 311 complaints about syringes over the past several years. (Gothamist)
  5. A Brooklyn taxi driver, Ishtiaq Ahmed, is suing the NYPD for being allegedly arrested under a false pretense at his mosque last year. He claims that police officers arrested him in retaliation after he was enforcing COVID-19 social distancing rules. (The City)
