Here are the top five stories in New York City today:
- New York's monkeypox cases have now reached 14, with the first one detected on May 19. World Health Organization is debating whether to declare the outbreak an "international health emergency." So far at least 1,600 people in 39 countries have been infected. (New York City Patch)
- Former President Donald Trump and several of his children will be required to testify under oath on July 15, an Appeals Court ruled on Tuesday. New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is leading an investigation into the Trump Organization, said she has evidence his company exaggerated the value of NYC real estate assets. (Associated Press)
- Black and Latino students were admitted to specialized high schools at disproportionately low rates this year, continuing a long-time trend. While Black students made up 20 percent of test takers, they represented a mere three percent of admission offers. Latino students made up 25 percent of test takers, receiving a little over five percent of all offers. (Gothamist)
- What a disappointment! Swimming programs will be cut at NYC's public pools this summer— including classes for children and seniors and lap swimming for adults. Pools will still open during the day. Mayor Adams said he would like to find a "creative solution" during a recent TV appearance. (New York City Patch)
- It's primary season in New York, and the battle for endorsements is on. Mayor Eric Adams announced his endorsement of Governor Kathy Hochul for re-election on Wednesday. Meanwhile, in a closely-watched congressional primary race, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren endorsed Congressman Jerry Nadler over Carolyn Maloney. (New York City Patch)
