Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Reservations are now open for NYC's restaurant week (or should I say restaurant month?) running from July 18 to August 21. Over 600 restaurants across the city are participating, with deals starting as low as $30. (New York City Patch)
- An eighth detainee this year, Elijah Muhammad, 31, has died at Rikers Island. A corrections officer was fired in connection with his death on Sunday, according to a statement, although it's unclear how he died and what role the officer played. (Gothamist)
- The animal rights organization PETA is planning a protest against Starbucks for charging extra for vegan alternative milks in their drinks. They're planning to be at a grab-and-go location in the New York Times Building in Midtown at 9:30 a.m., where they'll "stuff a lifelike calf — as in, a baby cow — into a bloody Starbucks cup." A nearby billboard featuring Paul McCartney supports their cause. (Patch)
- New York City's Emergency Management Department released an eerie public service announcement Monday instructing New Yorkers how they should respond in the event of a nuclear explosion. Simply put, there's three steps you need to follow, the short video explains: "Get inside, Stay inside, Stay tuned." (AMNY)
- New York State's top judge, Justice Janet DiFiore, announced that she will step down from the bench at the end of August. A Cuomo appointee, perhaps the most controversial moment in her career was when she wrote the majority opinion three months ago overturning State Senate and Congressional redistricting maps approved by the Democratic state legislature.
