Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- Mayor Adams on Wednesday grappled once more with addressing gun violence in New York City, in the wake of the mass shooting in Texas on Tuesday that left 19 students and two teachers dead. He's considering increasing the number of school safety officers assigned to check for weapons. So far this year officials have confiscated over 5,500 weapons from students. Still, the Mayor added, "Public safety can't be about luck ... It's going to take so much more." (New York City Patch)
- Wednesday marked the anniversary of George Floyd's murder two years ago in Minneapolis. The day was marked by a near whisper from elected officials and other leaders, as much of New York City's focus appears to have shifted from police reform to preventing gun violence. (New York City Patch)
- A new lawsuit targeting 124 real estate companies is the largest of its kind in New York City history. It alleges the companies discriminated against low-income housing voucher recipients, by refusing them apartments. The lawsuit is just the 'tip of the iceberg' one advocate said. (New York City Patch)
- Fewer New Yorkers are wearing masks on the city's buses and subways than any time since the start of the pandemic, according to recent MTA stats. The rate is around 67%, down from 90% in January. Many straphangers are expressing confusion, given that the federal mask mandate on public transit was stricken down last month. (The City)
- Antonio Delgado was sworn in as New York's Lieutenant Governor Wednesday, making him the third person to fill that role in this year alone, after Brian Benjamin was arrested on bribery charges. Delgado will be up for re-election as soon as in next month's June 28 primaries. (NY State of Politics)
