NEW YORK CITY — New York City remains under a heat advisory and air quality alert as the area begins to slightly cool off after last week's heat wave.

The heat advisory will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Monday and the air quality alert will last until 11 p.m., according to the city's emergency management.

The city since last Thursday had seen four days straight of temperatures either close or exceeding 90 degrees.

Possible scattered thunderstorms could hit the area later Monday, according to forecasters.

Temperatures Monday will hit a high of 79 degrees, with winds reaching 21 mph. Tuesday will be hotter, with a high temperature of 86 degrees in the city.

Wednesday, there will be a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and will be partly sunny, with a high near 90.

Thursday will be mostly sunny and humid, with temperatures reaching 82 degrees.

Friday will be sunny again, with temperatures slightly cooler at 77 degrees.
