Here are the top five stories today in New York City:

  1. As public school classes begin on September 8, some New York City teachers are being hit hard by the rising cost of school supplies which have risen by 10 percent due to inflation, according to a study. One teacher who spoke to Patch under the condition of remaining anonymous said she spent $1,000 this year, of which she expects to be compensated only $225. (New York City Patch)
  2. New York City is suing Starbucks after the business fired a barista at an Astoria location who was a union organizer. The city believes Starbucks is in violation of its Fair Workweek Law, which was passed in 2020 to prevent fast-food or chain companies from firing employees without providing a "just cause." (New York City Patch)
  3. New Yorkers who received a first shot of the monkeypox vaccine can schedule an appointment for a second dose starting 10 weeks later. NYC is also preparing to allow walk-ins for first shots, while opening up more appointments and changing the eligibility criteria to include sex workers. (New York City Patch)
  4. An official from the National Labor Relations Board recommended rejecting Amazon's attempt to overturn a unionization vote at one of its Staten Island warehouses. The recommendation, made on Thursday, can still be appealed by Amazon, and even if the unionization vote is certified workers aren't guaranteed to receive a union contract. (THE CITY)
  5. NYCHA public housing residents in Coney Island are suing New York City for a slew of unresolved issues stemming from Hurricane Sandy, which hit the city nearly a decade ago. Their concerns include a line break which has left some families in the housing complex without cooking gas for more than a year. (Gothamist)
