Here are the top five stories today in New York City:
- A combination of inflation and bird flu will make the price per pound of turkeys higher than in past years in New York City this Thanksgiving. New York has had bird flu outbreaks among eight flocks. Meanwhile grocery store turkey prices for a fresh boneless, skinless turkey breast reached a record $6.70 per pound in September (112 percent higher than at the same time in 2021), according to the latest Consumer Price Index. (New York City Patch)
- At least 500 drones will fly across the New York City skyline today, projecting an aerial advertisement for the game Candy Crush. GPS-linked drones were first used for advertising in the New York area last year, and have some, like State Senator Brad Hoylman, concerned that "it’s outrageous to be spoiling our city’s skyline for private profit." (Gothamist)
- A community arts nonprofit on the Upper West Side has secured $3.5 million to purchase the landmarked West-Park Presbyterian Church. The church's congregation decided last year to sell the place of worship, which is in a state of disrepair, to a developer who sought to demolish it and build an apartment tower in its place. (New York City Patch)
- The NYPD this week will gain access to videos and photos posted by New Yorkers to Amazon's home surveillance app, Neighbors. The police department is joining more than 2,000 law enforcement agencies across the country that have entered an agreement with the company. (New York City Patch)
- A group of protestors who in 2015 alleged that then-candidate Donald Trump's security guards assaulted them outside of Trump Tower have settled, according to an attorney who represents them. The case was in its third day of jury selection. (NBC New York)
