NEW YORK CITY — A brewing winter storm could dump up to 6 inches of snow across New York City this weekend, forecasters said.

But, then again, maybe it won't.

New York City's snowfall forecast for Saturday's expected winter storm was still in flux two days out.

AccuWeather gave good odds for up to 6 inches of snow, while the National Weather Service found a "low probability" of accumulating snow and sleet.

"With a marginally cold airmass in place, the exact storm track and intensity will be crucial for precipitation types and amounts, particularly for the city and coast," a National Weather Service message stated.

"These details are expected to become clearer over the next 24-36 hours as the pieces of energy that will be forcing this system become better initialized by the weather models."

The certainty of snow is far greater for areas just west of New York City, as the metropolis is on the edge of forecast estimates by various weather services and outlets.

The National Weather Service warned of rain and snow Saturday and overnight.

AccuWeather pinned the chance of 1 to 3 inches of snow at 48 percent, and 39 percent for the 3 to 6 inches range.

And NBC4 reported the 1-to-3-inch range of snow is expected.
