NEW YORK — Brutal winds as strong as 60 MPH could batter New York City and other parts of the tri-state region on Monday, the National Weather Service warns. The five boroughs will be under a high wind warning until 6 p.m. as low pressure threatens to produce damaging gusts, according to the weather service.

Gusts that strong can knock down trees and power lines and make travel tough, especially for large vehicles, the weather service says. The MTA has banned empty tractor-trailers and tandems from the Verrazano-Narrows, Throgs Neck, Bronx-Whitestone and Robert F. Kennedy bridges through 6 p.m. Monday because of the high winds.

A 54 MPH gale was recorded in Midtown Manhattan at midnight and gusts are expected to break 50 MPH in Central Park on Monday afternoon, according to the weather service.
