A winter storm watch will be in effect after Monday night, when rain is expected to give way into snow, according to the National Weather Service.

"Total Snowfall: 5 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts possible," a weather briefing by the service states.

"This may result in difficult travel, especially during Tuesday AM commute."

And heavy snow likely won't be the only wintry hazard facing New Yorkers.

The winter storm watch warns of wind gusts up to 40 mph.

How much snow New Yorkers can expect depends on when rain Monday evening transitions into snow, as well as what course the weather system takes, forecasters said.

A southern turn for the storm likely will increase snowfall totals in New York City, according to a weather briefing.

"Snow amounts could be higher than forecast in this zone if precip changes to snow quicker and is slightly colder Tuesday morning," the briefing states.
