NYC Weather: 'Deadly' 100-Degree Temps Spur Days-Long Heat Warning

An excessive heat warning in effect Thursday and Friday prompted officials to open the city's cooling centers.

NEW YORK CITY — Mother Nature is poised to put — and leave — New York City under the broiler.

The city will be under an excessive heat warning Thursday and Friday as forecasters predict heat index to hit up to 105 degrees.

Heat indices will crack triple digits Thursday and soar to 104 degrees or higher Friday, the National Weather Service warned. The "oppressive heat and humidity" is expected to last through Saturday.

New Yorkers need to be prepared or potentially risk their lives, city officials warned.

“Heat is deadly, and climate change is making extreme heat more frequent and even more dangerous, especially for vulnerable New Yorkers, so it is absolutely critical that we take care of ourselves and each other,” said Ashwin Vasan, the city's health commissioner, said in a statement.

Cooling centers will open Thursday across the five boroughs and remain so through Saturday, officials said.

Locations may have changed since last year, so New Yorkers are encouraged to call 311 or visit Cooling Center Finder for updates. The finder itself will be activated Wednesday evening, officials said.

And good news, pet owners — the finder also shows what cooling centers welcome dogs, cats and other critters. The city also partnered with Petco to provide additional heat relief spaces.

The heat is expected to cool ever-so-slightly on Saturday. But don't plan on turning off the air conditioning: it'll still have a 99-degree heat index, city officials warned.

A cold front Sunday looks poised to break the heat down to a relatively bearable 83-degree high temperature, forecasters said.
