NYC Weather Forecast: Frostbite Warning As Deep Freeze Worsens

Forecasters are warning New Yorkers to be cautious of frostbite during Friday's bitterly cold temps.

NEW YORK, NY — Freezing cold temperatures and bitter winds are following the "cyclone bomb" snow storm on Friday, and weather forecasters caution that the wind is so cold that it can cause frostbite in just 30 minutes to unprotected skin.

New York on Friday will see temperatures of around 10 degrees, but with strong winds it can feel like it's -15 or even -20 degrees. The wind is so strong, the National Weather Service warns, that it can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

The bitterly cold wind chill is thanks to wind gusts that will reach around 45 mph, according to a wind chill advisory from the NWS.

Forecasters say that Saturday will be warmer, but only slightly. The high will be 14 degrees on Saturday, but the wind chill will again make it feel much colder, according to the National Weather Service.

"The prolonged cold temperatures are extremely dangerous, especially for vulnerable populations. We advise New Yorkers to stay indoors as much as possible," the city's emergency management commissioner Joseph Esposito cautioned in a statement.
